After the Atomic bomb was dropped on Japan they had to either surrender or face a brutal defeat. After the Japanese surrendered, the United States provided them with supplies such as food, building materials, and other items necessary for survival (Levering interview).

We are not really helping Japan now because they are very prosperous and they have a lot of money (
Levering interview). “We are not because, they, for the last twenty years have been running huge trade surpluses with us. From that they have been making money off of us year after year. They really have a lot more money than we do and in a real sense, they do not need anybody's help.  They’re very prosperous” said Prof. Levering (Levering interview).

The dropping of the bomb helped Japan realize that they needed to end the war. The Japanese were also becoming power hungry and that added to their destruction. Japan deployed their forces so thin that they were not prepared for a long war with America (
Levering interview). With all of their war effort, Japan was running low on food and proper shelter for their citizens (Levering interview). So even a little thing like the upcoming winter would have destroyed them (Levering interview).
